Description

The purpose of this grant activity is to fund up to three projects that will support the demonstration of a model system of comprehensive care and medical management for individuals and families at risk or affected by Thalassemia. Such model(s) should involve a complex network of services including screening; diagnosis; counseling; education; psychosocial services; specialized medical care including regular red blood cell transfusions; and the monitoring, prevention, and treatment of iron overload and medical complications resulting from repeated transfusions. The funded centers will work collaboratively with consumer organizations such as the Cooley's Anemia Foundation along with other entities/organizations/agencies/hospitals. Applicants will be expected to collaborate with other MCHB-funded hemoglobinopathy programs, including the Sickle Cell Disease Newborn Screening Programs (SCDNBSP), Sickle Cell Disease Treatment Demonstration Programs (SCDTDP), and the National Coordinating Center(s) for each of these programs.
