Description

The USGS is offering a funding opportunity for research contributing to improved methods for modeling car-based and pedestrian evacuations for sudden-onset hazards, such as tsunamis. Research is needed that focuses on characterizing evacuation potential for at-risk populations associated with tsunami hazard scenarios on the California coast. This research would further existing collaborations between the U.S. Geological Survey, California Geological Survey, and California Emergency Management to improve knowledge of tsunami risk issues. This information would be an essential component of supporting effective local, State, and Federal tsunami preparedness and response strategies. Research is specifically needed for coastal communities with limited egress options, such as the island and peninsula communities in the City of Newport Beach (e.g., Balboa Island and Lido Isle).
