Description

Implementation of this program in New Mexico will provide internships for recent college graduates and graduate students to gain firsthand experience with natural resources management; biology, ecology, endangered species, conservation of sensitive and non-sensitive species and communities and management of public lands. Through this program interns are hired by the recipient and are placed in BLM New Mexico Field offices to accomplish programmed tasks supporting the Bureau's Resource Programs; wildlife, plant conservation/botany, range, geology, engineering, forestry, recreation, NEPA, GIS/GPS, natural resource management, hydrology, soil science, cultural programs and business management under the mentorship of BLM staff specialists. The term of internships will vary from a minimum of 3 months to a maximum of 36 months depending on need and funding availability. Intern duties may include but not limited to: native seed collection, special status plant and animal id, collections, studies and inventory,vegetation monitoring, non-native/noxious weed inventory and treatment, foresty inventry, data entry, archeological inventory, identification and inventory of abandoned mine lands, manage and analyze data, collect measurements in mine settings, project construction and monitoring. The intent is accomplish needed BLM resource management work while improving the job candidate pool of natural resources gratudates who also possess experience with science-based stewardship
