This funding opportunity is for Special Studies/Research and Public Education/Outreach for theSouth Florida Geographic Initiative including the Water Quality Protection Program for theFlorida Keys National Marine Sanctuary and the Southeast Florida Coral Reef Initiative.Examples of eligible Special Studies/Research program activities include: identifying andunderstanding cause/effect relationships of pollutants, transport pathways and biologicalcommunities of the Sanctuary; developing effective remediation techniques for aquaticresources; addressing specific management questions and concerns; development of predictivemodels and monitoring tools; and overall improvement of our understanding of South Floridaecosystems. Examples of eligible Public Education and Outreach projects include: increasingpublic awareness regarding residential canal remediation; impacts of non-point source pollution;increasing awareness of South Florida aquatic resources; distribution of Best ManagementPractices literature; and solicitation of public participation to assist with implementation ofFKNMS Water Quality and Protection Program corrective actions. The FKNMS Water QualityProtection Program has identified five individual topics below as priority areas for FY14funding. Applicants must address one or more of these areas to be considered eligible.
