This FOA will enhance CDC’s ability to reduce racial and ethnic disparities in health by supporting the development of a national public health leadership fellowship program to train racial/ethnic minority undergraduate and post-doctoral recipients who are under-represented in public health careers. [Note: The term “under-represented” refers to those population groups reported by the Institute of Medicine (IOM) as severely under-represented among the nation’s health professionals, including African Americans, American Indians and Alaska Natives, many Hispanic/Latino populations, some Asian Americans (e.g., Hmong and other Southeast Asians) and Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders. ] The program will consist of two training tracks, a one year track for post-doctoral students, and a ten-week summer track for undergraduate students or recent graduates (received bachelor’s degree within one year or less before application to the program). This program will solicit participants among highly qualified racial/ethnic minority students with the goal of provision of training in the principles and practice of public health leadership to enhance the potential for career mobility and future leadership roles. The program will be guided by provision of comprehensive training in the core public health functions. In addition, the training program will focus on mastery of public health leadership skills for both undergraduate and post-doctoral tracks.
