Background: The Canyon County, BLM Moab Field Office over the past 5 years has been in partnership with Rim to Rim Restoration. This cooperative effort has provided the Canyon Country District in Southeast Utah with invasive species and noxious weed control on public lands throughout Southeast Utah and has assisted to the BLM Moab Field Office with riparian and public land vegetative restoration projects. Rim to Rim Restoration in cooperation with the BLM Moab Field Office has designed and implemented a variety of restoration projects that have included the use of herbicide application, tree planting, seeding, irrigation installation and vegetation treatments. Recently the BLM Moab Field Office has begun a coordinated effort with Rim to Rim Restoration to develop a native plant propagation material center (Mayberry Plant Reserve) to facilitate local native plant restoration and augmentation efforts and needs.Objectives: 1. The objective of this project is to continue the work that has been accomplished in southeast Utah for the BLM, Canyon Country District with invasive species removal, riparian and upland restoration treatments and projects, wildlife habitat improvement projects involving vegetative planting, native plant development, initial maintenance of restoration areas and monitoring associated activities. The recipient would work with local BLM Resource Specialists to identify needs, develop a work/implementation plan, lead or facilitate project implementation and monitoring treatment effectiveness throughout identified areas in the Canyon Country District on an annual basis. The recipient may be asked to provide supplies and materials used in restoration activities including, but not limited to: herbicides, shrub or tree stock to include native, regionally native, non-native and locally sourced stock, irrigation supplies and other resources needed to successfully meet BLM restoration objectives. The recipient would also be asked to continue current efforts to develop a Moab based native plant material propagation center that would facilitate the collection and establishment of seeds and/or plants and/or utilizing seeds/plants identified in coordination with the BLM Moab Field Office and facilitate studies for successful propagation and development of this native seed and plant materials source.Public Benefit: This project would help support and foster awareness and motivation for ecological restoration and responsibility in the Moab area through the reestablishment of native vegetation for the benefit of wildlife, recreation and a sustainable watershed. The implementation of this project would provide support and organization for collaborative projects that include local youth, volunteers, service organizations, and businesses by implementing invasive species control, native riparian restoration work on BLM administered lands. This project provides direct benefits to the public in assisting restoration of riparian and wildlife habitats on a watershed basis, with downstream benefits realized to all landowners. The project indirectly benefits the BLM through implementation of improved restoration techniques; restoration of public lands and sensitive resources in compliance with environmental laws and guidance; and in providing for restoration services which are rare and difficult to obtain within the region.
