The Consortium will be charged with three primary objectives: 1) continue building the competence of mainstream aging services organizations to better respond to the needs of older racial and ethnic minority and LGBT individuals; 2) develop and disseminate training and technical assistance to racial and ethnic minority and LGBT national and community organizations that will enable them to better recognize the needs of older individuals; 3) identify and develop training and technical assistance strategies and/or materials for older racial and ethnic minority and LBGT individuals. The Consortium work will build on decades of experience targeting special populations, identifying need, barriers to service and identifying appropriate strategies to meet those needs. Further, the Consortium will be charged with identifying and tailoring informational materials and innovative strategies designed in a culturally competent manner to alert racial, ethnic minority and LBGT older individuals and their families how to prevent financial exploitation. Resources and materials will be designed to ensure that the Older Americans Act (OAA) mandates directing that particular attention be paid to those in greatest economic and social need and who are further isolated by their race/ethnicity, limited English speaking proficiency or sexuality are met.
