Description

The USGS Southwest Biological Science Center (SBSC) is offering a funding opportunity to a CESU partner for research investigating the cascading effects of climate change on riparian and stream-dependent organisms. Climate change is expected to add drought stress to riparian and aquatic ecosystems of the Upper Rio Grande. As snowfall in the headwaters decreases and snowmelt occurs earlier, early summer river flows are predicted to decrease, resulting in lower flows, aquatic habitat fragmentation, and deeper groundwater through diminished recharge of aquifers. This can be expected to have cascading effects on riparian and stream-dependent organisms, and potentially lead to increases in exotic plants.
