This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) invites applications to develop short-term surrogate tests that provide a comprehensive measure of resilience in animal models of aging. Applicants may also include aims to assess resilience in humans to identical or analogous stressors to those proposed for their animal model studies. Resilience is defined here as the ability of an organism to adequately respond to physical or molecular challenges or stresses. Greater resilience has been hypothesized to correlate with longevity and better healthspan, but appropriate methodology to test this in animal models is currently lacking. The purpose of this FOA is to develop tests that can be used to measure resilience to physical or molecular stresses, but does not include psychological or social stressors. The outcomes should lead to short-term tests of resilience that are predictive of subsequent health. In the context of animal studies, this predictability should be tested against manipulations known to increase lifespan and healthspan.
