Description
Influenza is an important cause of morbidity, mortality, and healthcare burden across all age groups. Because influenza viruses are constantly changing and vaccines are reformulated every year, annual estimates of the effectiveness of influenza vaccines in preventing influenza infection and its associated complications are needed in order to evaluate the protection provided by annual, nationwide vaccination programs. Each year in the United States, influenza viruses infect up to 20% of the population and cause hundreds of thousands to millions of medically-attended illnesses and thousands of hospitalizations and deaths. Annual influenza vaccination is the primary influenza prevention strategy and is recommended for all people ≥ 6 months of age in the U.S. Many studies have described the vaccine effectiveness (VE) of seasonal and 2009 pandemic influenza vaccine formulations against laboratory-confirmed symptomatic and medically-attended outpatient influenza illness (Griffin, 2011; Treanor, 2012; Ohmit, 2014; McLean 2014).
