Description

Bureau of Reclamation is a water management agency with more than 600 dams in the 17 western states. Reclamation is best known for construction of dams, power plants, and canals including Hoover Dam on the Colorado River, Grand Coulee on the upper Columbia River and Folsom Dam on the American River. Reclamation is the largest wholesaler of water in the country and second largest producer of hydroelectric power in the western United States. The purpose of this project is to develop and test a new vertical full duplex Passive Integrated Transponder (PIT) tag antenna system for use in canals and rivers. The system will be able to detect out-migrating salmonid smolts that may be moving in the upper half or third of the water column with minimal/no impact to threatened and endangered species or human activities (such as recreation). Data regarding PIT tag information collection efficiency that spans the full water column to detect passing tagged fish will be disseminated publicly and allow fishery managers to better estimate fish populations and enhance their ability to effectively manage fish populations
