Description

The purpose of this FOA is to improve drought preparedness and resiliency among private citizens and to subsequently reduce drought-related morbidity and mortality. This will be done by identifying and quantifying the current and potential health effects of drought in the awardee’s region and identifying the at-risk communities. Subsequently, the awardee will develop and implement interventions to mitigate the identified health effects in their at-risk communities. The strategies include the following: 1) identify and engage stakeholders; 2) identify and acquire existing data related to drought and health; 3) analyze these data to identify current and potential drought-related health effects and at-risk populations; 4) draft a plan to mitigate identified health effects in identified target populations; 5) develop interventions; 6) implement interventions; and 7) conduct process and outcome evaluations. The expected project period outcomes are as follows: 1) increased number of private citizens aware of potential drought-related health effects; 2) increased number of private citizens taking appropriate actions to protect themselves from potential drought-related health effects; 3) improved capacity of public health to protect the public from drought-related public health effects; and 4) improved drought preparedness and resiliency among private citizens.
