Description

The primary goal of original RFA-FD-14-085 was to facilitate long term improvements to the national food safety system by providing States with information to help identify needed changes and resources to enforce produce safety requirements modeled after FDA's produce safety rule. The scope of the awarded cooperative agreement is being expanded to develop a national resource to assist States as they seek to establish or enhance their individual produce safety and regulatory programs. This goal shall be accomplished by providing consultation, information, and technical assistance to States in support of their produce safety initiatives. The National Consortium for Produce Safety Program Development (the Consortium) shall serve as a nationwide resource by working in partnership with State regulatory and food safety agencies, Federal entities, and other stakeholders to identify, share, and utilize data and research to improve the effectiveness of produce safety programs. The fundamental mission of the Consortium is to assist in enhancing the capabilities of States to develop a produce safety program that is modernized and in alignment with the standards set forth in the FDA’s Regulation: “Standards for the Growing, Harvesting, Packing, and Holding of Produce for Human Consumption” (commonly referred to as the Produce Safety Rule).
