The BLM changes end date to 22 August 2016.All Other Terms and Conditions Remain Unchanged BACKGROUND: The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) seeks to support the National Landscape Conservation System Research Support Program by financially supporting scientific studies and research aimed at increasing the effectiveness of BLM's resource management decisions. The Program seeks to engage the external scientific community in conducting management-focused studies on the National Conservation Lands that can benefit management of the public lands. Each year in support of this program the BLM Washington Office issues a call for proposals.OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this award will be to support studying the geomorphic effects of woody debris jams on channel morphology and stream bank erosion in Thompson Creek in Virginia. This project has the following objectives: 1) Analyze the occurrence and scale of woody debris jams along Thompson Creek, VA; 2) Analyze the geomorphic effects of woody debris jams on morphology of Thompson Creek; and 3) Gain a better understanding of the connections between in channel woods and flood plain woods.PUBLIC BENEFIT: The results of this work will provide detailed information on the existing patterns of woody debris jams in Thompson Creek and its effects on stream banks. This information will be directly useful in developing management plans for watershed for reducing stream bank erosion which is one of the major challenges in this area. It will also generate extremely high precision digital data sets of each woody debris jam for their long term temporal analysis and role in the ecology of Thompson Creek watershed.
