Description

An estimated 99% of wet and upland prairies have been lost in the Willamette Valley from pre-settlement times. Consequently, many of the plant and animal species associated with these habitats have become threatened or endangered. Projects would occur in the West Eugene Wetlands and in the Siuslaw and Upper Willamette Resource areas of the Eugene District and adjacent private lands. BLM is interested in supporting projects such as (but not limited to): demographic studies of rare plants, both designing the studies and following established protocols; restoration of upland and wet prairies; seed collection and growout; controlling invasive plants, including the use of herbicides; monitoring rare plants and butterflies; establishing experimental populations of rare plants; assessing restoration impacts and needs; writing plans for restoration projects and species management; analyzing plant and habitat data to look for trends, treatment effects, etc.; experiments to evaluate the effects of climate change on rare plant species and education and outreach. Some projects may require Section 7 consultation with the US Fish and Wildlife Service and permits to work with and propagate Threatened or Endangered plant/insect species.
