Description of Program and/or Project a. Background: On May 8, 2008, Public Law 110-229 (section 202) established the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse Outstanding Natural Area (ONA) in Palm Beach County, Florida and designated it a part of the National Conservation Lands â¿¿ the only unit of the system east of the Mississippi River. The site, totaling 120 acres, is a mix of sensitive native habitats and historic development from previous uses of the site and includes the nationally listed Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse, structures supporting previous military uses of the site and buildings related to past U.S. Coast Guard operations. The ONA was protected by Congress for its unique and nationally significant resources, which include cultural/historic resources dating back over 8,000 years. The collection of artifacts associated with this rich past is house at the Floida Atlantic Unviersity, Boca Rotan campus. These artifacts, over 1,700, were recoved from the ONA during the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act projects in 2010 and 2011. At collection, the artifacts were bagged and boxed and transported to the Florida Atlantic Univeristy and housed awaiting cataloging and stablization. This project is a continuation of the long established partnership between the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and Florida Atlantic Univeristy. b. Objectives: The purpose of project is to complete a physical inventory of the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse ONA collection, catalog each object in ICMS, stabilized objects as appropriate and continue housing of the collection at the Florida Atlantic University facility.
