Notice of Intent: Bandelier Archeological Inventory, 2016-2020
ArchivedNational Park Service
Description
Bandelier National Monument seeks to cooperatively inventory remaining areas of backcountry lands that are likely to contain cultural resources. Almost 98% of park lands where systematic survey is appropriate have been inventoried for cultural resources since the 1980s. Six hundred and fifteen (615) acres remain to be inventoried. The project implemented under this cooperative agreement would complete the park cultural resource inventory, fulfilling both NPS management goals and Section 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act, while providing hands-on opportunities for students to learn about the Ancestral Pueblo cultural landscape. The University of New Mexico, Office of Contract Archeology (UNM/OCA) seeks to educate undergraduate and graduate students in archaeological field methodology and site management, including identification and documentation. The Bandelier National Monument ⿿ University of New Mexico Archeological Inventory agreement will align the goals of both organizations for mutual exchange and public benefit. The park is located in Los Alamos, Sandoval, and Santa Fe Counties in northern New Mexico and the project areas identified by this agreement are located on mesa top and canyon mouth areas between 5400-7800 feet in elevation. Terrain within the project areas includes relatively isolated mesa tops and canyons with gentle to moderate slopes. Current vegetation is a piñon-juniper woodland mosaic with recent widespread piñon mortality, scattered Ponderosa Pine savanna in the upper elevation units, and occasional patches of grass and shrub vegetation types interspersed throughout.
