GLKN Monitoring Dragonflies for Mercury

Description
The University of Maine (UMaine) will provide technical assistance to the National Park Service Great Lakes Inventory and Monitoring Network (GLKN) by: 1) using previously-collected data to assess statistical power for different scenarios (number of sites, frequency, desired ability to detect change) of monitoring larval dragonflies for mercury in GLKN parks; 2) providing input on overall monitoring design; 3) developing a Quality Assurance Plan using a pre-existing template, and 4) recommending data analysis techniques. UMaine has been integral to development of mercury in larval dragonfly monitoring procedures at the national level and within GLKN. They have unique expertise in identifying and analyzing mercury from larval dragonflies collected at GLKN parks, and will continue to do so into the future via a separate cooperative agreement with the NPS Air Resources Division (ARD). Tasks in this Cooperative Agreement (CA) are tightly associated with those in ARD's CA, and as such UMaine is unique qualified as the proposed Recipient. Substantial Involvement by the National Park Service, in general, is as follows: 1) GLKN is involved with the Recipient in describing the goals, and jointly developing the scope of activities to be accomplished; 2) GLKN will assist the Recipient in selecting projects, provide orientation to park resources, oversee assignments, teach new skills, distribute tools and equipment and technical assistance and safety training, and 3) GLKN will provide the services of a Program Coordinator to serve as a liaison to (the Recipient) for the work under this agreement. This includes consulting and working specifically with the Recipient’s Program Coordinator and team leaders on recruiting, interviewing and recommending appropriate candidates. The Recipient is a member of the North Atlantic Coast Cooperative Ecostudies Study Unit who was awarded a Master Cooperative Agreement P14AC00888 allowing the University of Maine to participate in specific tasks, and can provide the necessary activities involved in this particular task while providing an effective outcome for NPS and the objectives of this research/educational project. UMaine has a proven track record and expertise in providing high quality mercury data and laboratory analysis. UMaine is also working with other NPS parks on the same tasks, which will allow for comparison of mercury data within GLKN parks
