Description

This cooperative project will develop a sub-regionally scaled vulnerability/risk assessment for heritage resources threatened by climate change. A GIS-based visualization tool will be produced that presents and overlays disparate datasets in order to identify and prioritize areas of concern and resources most at-risk. Datasets to be considered include: 1). existing climate change models, focusing on parameters that are known to be most destructive to building materials (severe weather events, temperature change, changes in RH, etc.); 2). current/known resource conditions, as documented in existing NPS databases (FMSS, LCS and/or CLI); and 3). known material responses to weather parameters (wind, rain/moisture, drying, etc.). The study area will be limited to national park units within Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah. This regional risk map is intended to be a pilot project for the visualization of multiple climate change and cultural resource data layers, and a scaleable model applicable to the larger Intermountain Region and other NPS regions.
