Description

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Great Lakes Science Center is offering a funding opportunity to a CESU partner for a new research project seeking to improve understanding of historical coregonine distribution in Lake Michigan. Managers are interested in restoration of one species, in particular, Coregonus artedi, as it is hypothesized to fill a niche that declining alewife populations have occupied over the past several decades. Increased abundance of this native species will not only enhance the biological diversity and integrity of the planktivore community, but also supplement the shrinking salmonine prey base. To restore artedi, it is necessary to understand their historical habitat uses to inform stocking locations or areas that could be protected from harvest.
