Description

Dune restoration has resulted in the increased plant diversity is an instrumental recovery component of federally endangered beach layia -Layia carnosa- and Humboldt Bay wallflower -Erysimum menziesii-. BLM-managed dunes in Humboldt County have become excellent examples of functioning native dune ecosystems. Restored dunes are often adjacent to dunes dominated by European beachgrass -Ammophila arenaria- which changes the dune morphology and allows other plants species such as yellow bush lupine -Lupinus arboreus- to become established. Yellow bush lupine is a nitrogen fixer which will lead to further changes in the dune plant community.
