A fundamental role of Interpretation in our national parks is to engage audiences of all backgrounds in thoughtful and inclusive dialogue about the people, cultures, and events that have influenced and continue to shape our national experience and identity. Alcatraz Island, one of the iconic symbols of the American justice system, calls out as the significant place to reexamine the central role prisons have played in the African American experience.
