NOTICE OF INTENT TO AWARD: This funding announcement is not a request for applications or proposals. This announcement is to provide public notice of the National Park Service’s intention to award a Grant Agreement. Constructed in 1910, the Isaiah T. Montgomery House was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1976 and a Mississippi Landmark in 2003. In 2013, the structure was named one of Mississippi Heritage Trust’s Ten Most Endangered Places in Mississippi. Montgomery was formerly enslaved and after the Civil War he founded Mound Bayou, one of the oldest and largest African-American towns in the United States. His life and activities as a Mississippi statesman provide a window into race relations in the South in the early twentieth century. His home was a center for political activity and provides an excellent opportunity to enrich our understanding of this community leader’s impact on the history of Mississippi and the United States. Once a point of pride for Mound Bayou, the Montgomery House sits vacant and deteriorating today. Please see attached Full Announcement for more information.
