Description

The Polyphagous Shot Hole Borer (PSHB, Euwallacea sp.) is a recent introduction into southern California from Southeast Asia that carries and cultivates a Fusarium fungus that has the potential to severely debilitate or kill almost all the native trees that occur in the Santa Monica Mountains (SMM). Since its discovery east of the SMM in 2004, the PSHB has, particularly since 2012, spread westward and has recently been found in the central SMM. The Resource Conservation District of the SMM (RCD) has served as lead in monitoring and controlling PSHB infestations in the SMM. The purpose of this agreement is for the NPS to partner with RCD in implementing surveys and immediate removal of infected trees. Funds provided will primarily support tree quarantine and removal work. Efforts will be successful if ingression of PSHB / Fusarium dieback into the SMM is contained to a few isolated locations with low vegetation impact until such time as an effective biological control measure is developed. Personnel from RCD and NPS will collaborate to survey and monitor for occurrences of the PSHB / Fusarium dieback and when infestations are found on public lands in and adjacent to the SMM, will: â¿¢ Prioritize infestations for treatment based on ecological impact and potential to spread. â¿¢ Based on current research and management recommendations, prescribe, implement, and evaluate site specific procedures for removal of infested branches and trees.
