Master Cooperative Agreement Number P15AC00015 was entered into by and between the Department of the Interior, National Park Service, (NPS), and American Conservation Experience (ACE). Project Goals – This project will provide conservation work to protect and manage the bison, elk, and feral horse herds through repairs on critical segments of boundary fence within the South Unit of the park. Project Objectives – Upon completion of this project 7.03 miles of boundary fence will have all wood posts replaced with 10-foot steel (U-channel) posts, 141 In-line/29 corner braces replaced, and 5 flood gates will be rehabilitated. Additionally, approximately 1,000 feet of fatigued woven wire will be replaced and five (5) boundary access gates will be repaired and reset. This project will engage youth participants in hands-on experience in the rehabilitation of the South Unit boundary fence at THRO. It will motivate youth participants to become involved in the natural, cultural, and/or historical resource protection of their communities and beyond. ACE will recruit three (3) fence crews for 14 weeks for each crew consisting of one (1) Fence Crew Leader, one (1) Fence Assistant Crew Leader, and four (4) Crewmembers to replace approximately 2,000 10-foot wood posts with 10-foot (U-channel) steel posts, replace 141 h-braces, 29 corner braces, rebuild and rest 3 floodgate structures, reset 2 flood gate structures, and reset three (3) boundary access gates, replace approximately 1,000 feet of fatigued woven wire and rebuild wash crossing and wildlife crossings as needed. The NPS will provide cultural/environmental programs to the crewmembers including park tours, educational programs, talks on the history of the park, and other similar programs.
