Teaching Traditional Building/Landscape Skills - SLBE
ArchivedNational Park Service
Description
This announcement is not a request for applications. This is an update to the existing agreement to add additional funding to continue for an additional year. This project is with Child and Family Services of NW Michigan (Youth Works). The Teaching Traditional Building/Landscape Skills training project will expand an existing partnership between Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore (SLBE) and the Recipient with youth between the ages of 16-25. The objective of this Agreement is to provide one (1) crew leader and four (4) crewmembers the opportunity to work alongside park staff while learning basic building and landscape skills. The goal of this project is to begin the teaching, learning, and preserving traditional building/landscape trades by encouraging youth to consider these trades as options for vocations at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore (SLBE), in jobs within the neighboring communities, or nationwide. This project will provide the next generation of park stewards the opportunity for hands-on and personalized mentor-apprentice relationships working in crews completing projects addressed for their progressive skill levels. Promotes greater public and private participation in historic preservation programs and activities. This project builds resource stewardship ethics in its participants. The project(s) will include timber framing, stone/brick masonry repair, wood window repair/glazing, blacksmithing, roofing and siding, pruning, horticulture, cultural landscape management, and other traditional building/cultural landscape trade practices.
