THIS ANNOUNCEMENT IS NOT A REQUEST FOR APPLICATIONS.This announcement is to provide public notice of the National Park Service’s intention to award a task agreement under a previously competed or single source justified master cooperative agreement. This project will provide a youth crew experience at Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site while addressing critical deferred maintenance on trails. Youth crews will contribute to critical natural and cultural resource management and maintenance projects. The youth crew will consist of up to 3 youth enrollees and 1 adult crew leader. Youth crews will learn trail maintenance and preservation on the 1830’s Allegheny Portage Historic Railroad Trace, Levels 6 through 10 which extend from Cresson, PA to Duncansville, PA parallel to ’Old’ Route 22. Work will include: removal of rotten timbers, trail tread maintenance, construction and rehabilitation of water bars, check-dams, re-grading trail surfaces, clearing debris from ditches and drainage structures, removing vegetation along rock walls, clearing vegetation from historic foundations, and replanting native plants after invasive plant eradication. Youth will experience the management of resources to include timber and vegetation removal, trail tread maintenance, construction of trail drainage features such as water bars, re-grading, and re-planting.
