The FY18 KCRP Idea Development Award is intended to supportinnovative ideas and high-impact approaches based on scientifically sound evidenceto move toward the KCRP vision of eliminating kidney cancer. The researchproject should include a well-formulated, testable hypothesis based on strongscientific rationale and a well-developed and articulated research approachrelevant to active duty Service members, Veterans, other militarybeneficiaries, and the American public. Personnel on the proposed team shouldhave a strong background in kidney cancer research. The anticipated directcosts budgeted for the entire period of performance for an FY18 KCRP IdeaDevelopment Award will not exceed $400,000. Refer to Section II.D.5,Funding Restrictions, for detailed funding information. This fundingopportunity is open to applications that include eligible EIs and ECIs. The FY18 KCRP expects to fund one ormore scientifically meritorious applications from applicants includinginvestigators fitting the outlined description of an ECI. ECIs will be assessedusing different criteria for personnel during the review process (refer to SectionII.E.1.a, Peer Review). The KCRP defines the ECI as being within 10 years ofcompleting a terminal degree (doctorate or any medical degree), excluding timespent in medical residency, or during family medical leave. Time spent asa postdoctoral fellow is not excluded and must be within the 10-year span fromthe time of terminal degree. Postdoctoral fellows are not eligible forECI designation. A Career Guide is required, and a Career DevelopmentPlan is required to be submitted by ECIs only. The following are significant features of this awardmechanism: Research Approach: The scientificrationale and experimental methodology should demonstrate criticalunderstanding and in-depth analysis of kidney cancer. Experimental strategiesmay be novel or may be based on strong rationale derived from previouslypublished data and/or presented preliminary data. The feasibility of theresearch design and methods should be well defined, and a clear plan should bearticulated as to how the proposed goals of the project can be achieved.Additionally, resources should be identified and availability supported throughdocumentation. Identification of potential problems and pitfalls with alternateapproaches should be addressed. A statistical analysis plan for the proposedresearch should be included, if applicable, as well as a power analysis tosupport the design and sample size. Preliminary Data: Preliminarydata are required, but need not be in kidney cancer. Preliminary data mayinclude unpublished or published results from the laboratory of the PrincipalInvestigator (PI) or collaborators named on the application and/or data fromthe published literature relevant to kidney cancer. Innovation: Innovative research mayintroduce a new paradigm, challenge existing paradigms, look at existingproblems from new perspectives, or exhibit other creative qualities. This mayinclude high-risk, potentially high-gain, approaches to kidney cancer research,provided that the application demonstrates the potential for significant impacton the field of research, patient care, and/or quality of life. Research thatis likely to yield only an incremental advance is not consideredinnovative. Impact: Proposed researchprojects should address a central critical issue or question in kidney cancerresearch or clinical care. High-impact research will, if successful,significantly advance current methods and concepts in at least one of the FY18KCRP Areas of Emphasis. Personnel: Personnel areconsidered a crucial element of the FY18 KCRP Idea Development Award. Theapplication should demonstrate the investigators’ expertise in kidney cancerthrough the PI’s background, the research team, or through collaboration.Collaborations should be documented. The proposed research must be relevant to active duty Servicemembers, Veterans, military beneficiaries, and/or the American public.
