Description

The goal of this project is to conduct an evaluation of the Rear Erecting Shop at the Pullman Historic Site for use of future visitor experience. The evaluation of the Rear Erecting Shop is the first step to identify what the needs are to provide for safe visitor and employee access. This project will help the park fulfill the mandates set forth in the Presidential Proclamation that created the park: "it is in the public interest to preserve and protect the historic objects in the Pullman Historic District, Chicago, Illinois." "The National Park Service is directed to use applicable authorities to seek to enter into agreements with others to address common interests and promote management efficiencies, including provision of visitor services, interpretation and education, establishment and care of museum collections, and preservation of historic objects." The objective of this Agreement is to acquire an evaluation to assess the current condition of the extant historic fabric of the Pullman Rear Erecting Shop and prepare schematic options for the long-term repairs or stabilization for the site including the masonry walls, remaining framing, and other elements. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) as part of the Pullman State Historic Site owns the Rear Erecting Shop. The structure is one of the few remaining structures on the factory site that is being developed, in cooperation between the NPS and IDNR, to support the NPS Visitor Center, located on the factory site. The analysis, to be completed by the Friends of the Pullman State Historic Site is necessary to inform the next step in the building's stabilization and repairs. The NPS has a registered Civil Engineer with years of professional experience in leading design teams in the preservation and restoration of historic buildings. NPS and the Recipient will collaborate in providing technical guidance throughout the site investigation and the development of schematic approaches. The public purpose of this project is to promote greater public and private participation in historic preservation programs and activities. The project builds resource stewardship ethics in its participation. The information, services identified or developed by this project will used to develop a safe variety of strategies to increase public awareness, knowledge and support for historic preservation and stewardship of the nation’s cultural and historical heritage. The long-term goal is for the Rear Erecting Shop to become a critical visitor experience, helping interpret one of the nationally significant stories of Pullman transportation. The primary DOI priority supported is: (1g) Shift the balance towards providing greater public access to public lands over restrictions to access and (8b) Remove impediments to infrastructure development and facilitate private sector efforts to construct infrastructure projects serving American needs.
