Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit, Great Lakes Northern Forests CESU
ArchivedGeological Survey
Description
The USGS is offering a funding opportunity to a Great Lakes-Northern Forest CESU partner for technical assistance in research and development of methods and workflows used to extract scientific knowledge from literature into databases. USGS research efforts often rely on identification and extraction of information buried within the text of published literature. Currently this information is often extracted from literature manually, which is time consuming (e.g. reading articles, typing data from literature into database and more), introduces potential data entry mistakes, and results in records that are difficult to reproduce. New technologies are being explored in the USGS to programmatically identify and extract relevant information from digital documents. The overarching goal of this opportunity is to test viability of building a systematic method for knowledge extraction from literature.
