Description

Invasive species are one of the most significant threats to global biodiversity, impacting natural areas by altering ecosystem properties and suppressing native populations. More than 100 invasive species occur in the SMMNRA, decreasing native habitat quality, increasing the potential for wildfire ignition and spread, and impacting recreational opportunities. Personnel from the Recipient and NPS will work in partnership over two seasons to implement actions that provide for best management practices to control invasive nonnative plant species on federal and non-federal public lands in and adjacent to the SMMNRA. Through this task agreement we will carry out best management practices taking an integrated pest-management approach. As a result we expect reductions in invasive plant species targeted for control. We will accomplish this work by: â¿¢ Implementing comprehensive invasive plant control, including treatment, monitoring and effectiveness assessments. â¿¢ Native plant community restoration work. â¿¢ Accomplishing work with technicians, partner staff, interns and volunteers. â¿¢ Maintaining tool and herbicide inventories to ensure proper handling/use, cleaning, storage, and loss prevention. â¿¢ Training for crew members in project implementation protocols and the safe and effective use of hand tools, power equipment and herbicides. â¿¢ Monitoring prior to work activities to ensure protection of natural and cultural resources from damage. â¿¢ Ensuring all safety and work procedures are properly followed. â¿¢ Evaluation of all monitoring protocols and conservation techniques employed under this agreement to improve efficiency and effectiveness. Dissemination of findings to local agency partners and the public.
