Description

The US Geological Survey, John Wesley Powell Center for Analysis and Synthesis, is offering a funding opportunity to a CESU partner for research to develop a multi-scale synthesis of nitrogen fixation rates across the terrestrial biosphere. This analysis is expected to synthesize biological nitrogen fixation rates for the major N⿐fixing niches (trees, shrubs, herbs, lichens, cyanobacteria, mosses, liverworts, and free⿐living heterotrophic bacteria) across all terrestrial biomes globally, including agricultural systems; scale the quantity of symbiotic biological nitrogen fixation inputs associated with plants and lichens up to produce spatially⿐resolved nitrogen fixation maps for the U.S. and North America; and develop prognostic tools for evaluating environmental controls of niche⿐specific terrestrial nitrogen fixation rates across biomes and the globe for mapping, management, and modeling.
