Description

The School of Engineering at the UVM will participate with NPS staff in a collaborative program of research, documentation, assessment, training, and design development for the mission Church of San Jose de Tumacacori in Tumacacori National Historical Park (TUMA). The Mission Church (c.1800) is largely constructed of adobe, with vaults and domes of burnt bricks. The sanctuary and dome retain original decorated plasters, which have been the focus of several conservation interventions beginning in the 1940s. The persistence of hoop stress cracks in the dome and their role in the deterioration of dome plasters and the sanctuary windows, along with a number of obvious structural defects that include cracks and deformation of the vaults and several large cracks in nave and sacristy walls, raise questions about the current structural capacity of the church.
