Description

This project aims to improve understanding of Great Lakes nearshore ecosystem changes and to use this understanding to guide nearshore management and restoration. Specifically, this project aims to 1) monitor nearshore ecosystem conditions and trends using a park-based fixed station approach, 2) conduct research and experiments to understand the drivers of nearshore ecosystem problems (e.g, avian botulism outbreaks; nuisance algae growth) and develop management tools, and 3) provide data and visual content to be used by National Park Service staff and partners for public education and outreach. This project engages the recipient, state and local partners, and visitors in shared environmental stewardship by providing opportunities for direct interactions between the recipient (i.e., research community) and the NPS (i.e., management and outreach community). The project fosters new understanding and awareness of Great Lakes ecosystems by providing the scientific community with access to online datasets, reports, and presentations, and providing park interpretive staff and the public with unique underwater imagery from park habitats.
