Description

The USGS is offering a funding opportunity to a CESU partner for research in cosmogenic radionuclide geochronology. Geologic maps produced by the National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program (NCGMP) play a central role in informing assessments of natural resources (e.g., water or mineral resources), identifying natural hazards, and siting infrastructure. In particular, the most recently deposited ¿surficial geology¿ (typically recording the last ~2 million years of Earth history) provides data about geologically recent landscape evolution, including the history of erosion that has sculpted our iconic National Parks and often recording the response to past climate and tectonic variability. Understanding the history and rate of landscape evolution through construction of surficial geologic maps and associated research products provides the public and land-use managers with information about background rates of erosion or soil-loss, sediment loads to major river networks, and natural hazards associated with catastrophic events such as floods and earthquakes. In addition, these measurements of rates of past landscape change are necessary to test predictive models of land surface change that could be used to inform future land use decisions.
