Shenandoah Backcountry Support Interns

National Park Service

Description

THIS ANNOUNCEMENT IS NOT A REQUEST FOR APPLICATIONS. This announcement is to provide public notice of the National Park Service’s intention to award a task agreement under a previously competed or single source justified master cooperative agreement. Eight youth interns will be recruited by the Recipient staff and trained by NPS staff to work both alongside park staff and independently, providing the youth with hands on experience and broad exposure to how public lands are managed, how we support visitor use, and how a program office functions. This work is broken down into several areas. Visitor education, public outreach, and permitting aims to make visitors aware of both the opportunities available in the park, the associated safety and regulatory considerations, and ways they can be good co-stewards of our public lands. Patrols, field work, and emergency response encompasses the work done in the field to monitor and mitigate visitor use impacts, maintain infrastructure supporting visitor backcountry use, and provide assistance to visitors using our backcountry. Wilderness and backcountry program support exposes interns to the planning, research, analysis, and documentation that goes on behind the scenes to focus and coordinate the public outreach and work out in the field. All work will be done with an emphasis on safety. Time is carved out for learning and professional development not only to accomplish the work but also to lay the groundwork for a profession in public land management and conservation stewardship. Finally, interns will share their experiences with the community.
