Pinery Station: The project will use a team of historical architects, materials conservators, park staff, and students to create an earthen mortar mix for the Pinery Station. To develop the mortar mix, the team will conduct a mortar analysis on historic mortars found on site. This will determine aggregate size, sourcing, and lime to aggregate ratios. This mix will be adjusted to prevent rapid erosion to exposure and wall slope on remaining elevations. The new mortar mix will be recorded in park archives and FMSS for cyclic maintenance. The new mortar mix will be applied to the ruin over a one week workshop. The workshop will be used to teach NPS staff and students volunteers how to analyze, prepare and apply mortars in a repointing project. End results will include a repaired ruin with recorded steps for future repointing efforts by the NPS. Results also include training of park staff and students. Finally, results include enhanced visitor experience as the ruin is a popular visitor destination and walkable on a short trail from the visitor center. Preservation and interpretation of the Pinery Station is important for park programs and visitor experience.
