Description
The USGS is offering a funding opportunity to a CESU partner for research to investigate historical marine climate variability and push forward the use of state-of-the-art science (e.g., molecular hydrogen isotopic analysis and individual foraminifer oxygen and carbon isotopic analysis) for predicting the impact of paleoenvironmental changes in the coastal and marine environment. The research in this project is expected to result in the development of multiple new Holocene climate histories from the Florida Keys, Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean. These paleoclimate reconstructions will allow for the impact assessment natural climate variations on these regions in the past. Ultimately, this will inform management decision making, including planning for the impacts of future climate change and sea-level rise that are expected to impact coastal communities and ecosystems. This work fits under a number of secretarial priorities and explicitly addresses ¿creating conservation stewardship legacy second only to Teddy Roosevelt¿ (and more specifically, ¿utilizing science to identify best practices to manage land and water resources and adapt to changes in the environment¿).
