This announcement is not a request for applications. This announcement is to provide public notice of the National Park Service's intention to award financial assistance for the following project activities without competition to Stephen F. Austin State University who is a Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit member who previously competed. The objectives of this project is to conduct study relating to the involvement of African Americans in historic developments at Arkansas Post National Monument (ARPO). Historic resources indicate African Americans have been present at the post and environs since the early Historic period, but details are sparse through the Fur Trade & Territorial periods w/slightly more evidence known for Civil War period. Census data indicates a significant proportion of the local population is African American and the prevalence of intergenerational continuity (for both African & Euro-American communities). The findings of the study will be documented & supported by appropriate historical and ethnographic evidence, identified and cited in sufficient detail as to allow the information to be readily located and reviewed. Information gathered in this study for the interpretation program to the public; information is needed to branch out and do more programming to connect to the history of the park.
