Description

This project extends and builds upon the previous Subsistence project entitled Traditional Subsistence Practices and Transference of Knowledge to the Younger Generation. The objectives for this project are: 1) promote the exchange of contemporary and traditional subsistence practices between Denali (Nikolai) and Lake Clark (Nondalton) communities; 2) facilitate the sharing of subsistence-related traditional knowledge with youth; 3) review the current social science research methods used in Alaska, especially relating to subsistence, and identify what would work for our project and what would not; and 4) develop and implement research methods with a participatory integral approach within the framework of indigenous knowledge. To date we have conducted and transcribed 24 interviews and developed a draft booklet, maps, and an edited 10-minute video.
