This award directly supports Department of Interior priorities (1a and 3a). The single source award to Boise State University supports Secretarial Action #1a: ¿creating a conservation stewardship legacy second only to Teddy Roosevelt by utilizing science to identify best management practices to manage land and water resources and allowing adaptation to changes in the environment¿. This proposed project¿s satellite transmitter results will identify migration and wintering sites critical to an iconic American grassland bird species, the Long-billed Curlew. That information will help inform where to focus efforts to support this and other grassland- dependent species of conservation concern. This project will allow the Service and partners to better understand migration routes of adults breeding in New Mexico and migratory connectivity throughout the species¿ entire range. These data will assist the State of New Mexico, and other conservation partners (including private landowners) select the land management practices (voluntary easements, enhancement and restoration efforts, and grazing regimes) most appropriate to support the curlew population.
