Description

The Southwest Biological Science Center of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is offering a funding opportunity to one member of the Rocky Mountain Cooperative Ecosystems Studies Unit (CESU) Program. The goal of this project is to promote cooperation between the USGS and a CESU partner in order to support ecological research along the Colorado River in Arizona. This project will improve understanding of the role of nutrients, especially phosphorus in driving ecosystem dynamics in Grand Canyon . The proposal shall describe an approach for developing a phosphorus budget for the Colorado River ecosystem including measuring inputs of phosphorus released from Lake Powell and tributary streams. Important elements of the CESU partner research roles will include quantifying relationships between sediment (silt, clay, turbidity) and phosphorus and quantifying phosphorus inputs during tributary flooding events, many of which are remote and ungagged.
