Description

The USGS is offering a funding opportunity to a CESU partner with expertise on the physical and lower trophic setting of the nearshore Beaufort Sea and K-12 outreach in support of a new research project focused on marine fish communities and avian predators. Particularly interested in the role of the river plume (identified by temperature and salinity) in structuring the ecosystem from lower trophic species to fish and birds. This agreement is part of a subtask within a larger collaborative project between the USGS Changing Arctic Ecosystem Initiative and the Outer Continental Shelf Program with the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM), ¿The Impact of Marine Fish Communities on Red- throated Loon Productivity in the Beaufort Sea.¿ The expert will function as part of a multidisciplinary team to refine the implementation of the field sampling design and interpretation of results to maximize our understanding of ecosystem function from physical drivers through the food web to a top avian predator, the red- throated loon, and provide an opportunity for science outreach to local Iñupiat villagers and students by organizing a K-12 Oceanography Program. USGS scientists will be offered an opportunity to discuss their ongoing research in this outreach program
