National Institute of Corrections

Description

In 2008 the National Institute of Corrections (NIC) published a comprehensive resource designed to assist paroling authorities in understanding the requirements of effective evidence-based decision-making and practices with the hope that they could better understand and articulate their agency needs to funders, regulatory agencies, and other corrections system stakeholders. At that time, parole supervision agencies were beginning to embrace evidence-based practices and corrections agencies were beginning to understand what evidence-based practices meant for institutions. It was important therefore to bring paroling authorities into the conversation and assist them in understanding how these practices fit with their mission in making paroling decisions and to introduce the idea of using standardized tools in that process.
