Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global patient safety and public health concern. Hospital acquired infections (HAI) lead to adverse outcomes and increased cost of treatment. Effective infection prevention and control (IPC) interventions can reduce HAIs. The Government of India has prioritized combating AMR. The All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) at the direction of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) is directing the only standardized HAI surveillance network in India with 32 nodal centers in 22 states. Through this NOFO, AIIMS will work with CDC and ICMR to implement a step-wise, scalable approach to generate and report accurate HAI and AMR data. In the first year, sites will perform HAI surveillance, improve antimicrobial use and use data to target IPC activities. Short-term outcomes include develop a trained workforce; ensure standardization of surveillance; and strengthen IPC programs. The long-term objective is a sustainable AMR and HAI surveillance network that produces quality data to inform the development and implementation of evidence-based national policies on IPC, antimicrobial stewardship and HAI prevention.
