Description

Project Description: The work funded with this agreement entails removing and replacing a fourth tide gate on Salmon Creek at Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge. This is the final task associated with Phase 1 of the Salmon Creek Delta Restoration Project. Phase 1 included replacing four tide gates within the Salmon Creek estuary to restore estuarine habitat and access for four Federally listed fish species: Coho, Chinook, steelhead, and tidewater goby. Phase 1 is nearly complete, with three new tide gates already installed; the fourth tide gate has been purchased, but a significant increase in steel and construction costs has resulted in a budget shortfall for construction and installation of the structure. Funds from this agreement will be used to remove and replace this fourth tide gate.Funding for replacement of the other three tidegates has come from a combination of various sources including the CDFG Fisheries Restoration Grants Program, the Coastal Program at Humboldt Bay, and other funds from the refuge system. Both the Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge and the Arcata Fish and Wildlife Office (AFWO) have been working with PCFWWRA to help fund other parts of this project in the recent past. Project Location: Salmon Creek Unit of Humboldt Bay NWR.Project timeframe: From February to October 2008.Project Tasks:Construction of a sheet pile coffer dam and internal dike.Demolition and removal of the majority of the existing tidegate structureConstruction of the new tidegate structure.Placement of the new tide gate.
