Purpose. The NIH Molecular Libraries Roadmap Initiative wishes to solicit HTS assay applications from the scientific community from investigators who have the interest and capability to work with the Molecular Libraries Probe Production Centers Network (MLPCN) in support of chemical probe development. This FOA promotes discovery and development of new chemical probes as research tools for use by scientists in both the public and private sector to advance the understanding of biological functions and disease mechanisms. This initiative is one of the integrated components of the NIH Molecular Libraries Roadmap initiative that offers biomedical researchers access to large-scale automated high throughput screening (HTS) centers in the MLPCN, diverse compound libraries in the Small Molecule Repository (MLSMR) and information on biological activities of small molecules in the PubChem BioAssay public database. Mechanism of Support. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) will utilize the NIH Small Research Grant (R03) grant mechanism and runs in parallel with the reissue of PAR-08-034 that solicits applications for MLPCN under the X01 Resource Access mechanism. Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. The total number of assays to be selected depends on the scientific merit of applications and the availability of resources within the MLPCN. The MLPCN intends to select and implement 100 HTS assays annually starting in 2008 to support novel and significant probe discovery and development. Budget and Project Period. Up to $25,000 in Total Costs, that is direct and facilities and administrative (F and A) costs, will be available for each award to cover assay implementation costs for applicant investigators, including non-commercially available reagents, travel to the screening centers and support for secondary and counter-screening assays for further development of chemical probes. Budgets for total costs are limited to $25,000 for each award and the project period is limited to one year with one year no-cost extension. I.e. to extend a grant's project period up to 12 months without additional funds to give grantees extra time to complete probe development. Eligible Institutions/Organizations. Individuals from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups as well as individuals with disabilities are always encouraged to apply for NIH support. Number of Applications. Applicants may submit more than one application, provided each application is scientifically distinct. Note: Parallel screens for multiple related molecular targets or cellular systems should be prepared as one application if these assays can be implemented within a single HTS campaign. Renewals and Resubmissions. Renewals (formerly competing continuation ) applications will not be accepted for the R03 grant mechanism. Up to two resubmissions (formerly revisions/amendments") of a previously reviewed small grant application may be submitted. See NOT-OD-05-046, April 29, 2005. Number of PDs/PIs. More than one PD/PI, or multiple PDs/PIs, may be designated on the application.
