-This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) represents the continuation of a long-standing NCI-supported program that provides support for salary and research costs for up to 5 years for individuals with health professional or science doctoral degrees who are not fully established investigators and who want to pursue research careers in the cancer prevention, control, population, and/or behavioral sciences. The primary objective of this program is to increase the number of investigators who have made commitments to focus their research endeavors on cancer prevention, control, behavioral, and the population sciences. -The award will provide from 3 to 5 years of salary up to $75,000 (plus fringe benefits) per annum and research support up to $30,000 per annum for specialized didactic study and mentored research. -Eligible candidates for an award must have a health professional or science doctoral degree and be: 1) already proficient in general epidemiology, behavioral sciences, or other relevant disciplines, and now want to make use of these proficiencies in cancer-focused research careers in prevention, control, population and/or the behavioral sciences; or 2) already trained in cancer epidemiology, etiology, prevention, control, and the behavioral and population sciences, but are not yet fully independent investigators. -Eligible candidates for an award must also be citizens or non-citizen nationals of the United States (U.S.), or must have been lawfully admitted to the U.S. for permanent residence at the time an offer of an award is made. Individuals on temporary visas are not eligible. -Eligible candidates must be able to commit at least 75 percent of full-time professional effort to the career development and research objectives of the K07 application. -Candidates must identify a primary mentor and co-mentors where needed. -Applications must include a career development plan as well as a research plan. The career development plan must include a strong didactic component. -A K07 application may be submitted on behalf of the candidate (principal investigator) by a domestic for-profit or non-profit institution/organization, or a public or private institution, such as a university, college, hospital or laboratory. Foreign institutions are not eligible to apply. -Applications must include a strong letter of institutional commitment to the career development of the applicant and to the effort commitment required of the K07. -Planning, direction, and execution of the proposed K07 research and career development plans are the responsibility of the applicant and his/her mentor(s). -A candidate for the K07 award may not apply concurrently for nor have an award pending for another U.S. Public Health Service (PHS) career development award. However, candidates may be principal investigators of NIH R03 and R21 grants or non-PHS equivalents at the time of application; and may apply and be awarded an NIH investigator-initiated grant or non-PHS equivalent during the project period of an NCI K07 award and retain the K07 award. -Up to two resubmissions (previously called revisions or amendments) of an application will be accepted. -Awards are neither renewable nor transferable from one principal investigator to another. -Applications must be submitted on or before the receipt dates described at http://grants.nih.gov/grants/funding/submissionschedule.htm. -The NIH will not accept any application in response to this PA that is essentially the same as one currently pending initial review unless the applicant withdraws the pending application. The NIH will not accept any application that is essentially the same as one already reviewed. This does not preclude the submission of a substantial revision of an application already reviewed, but such an application must include an introduction addressing the previous critique.
