Purpose. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) issued by the National Institute on Alcoholism and Alcohol Abuse (NIAAA), National Institutes of Health, is a limited competition FOA soliciting a cooperative agreement (U10) application from investigators currently supported under an existing study, entitled Collaborative Study of the Genetics of Alcoholism (COGA) to (i) identify genetic variants that affect the susceptibility to develop alcohol dependence in adult and adolescent populations, (ii) determine molecular and functional mechanisms of these variants, (iii) identify and characterize gene x gene and gene x environment interactions leading to alcoholism, (iv) develop and refine phenotypes that will facilitate genetic analysis. (v) perform prospective studies of COGA probands. Mechanism of Support.The U10 - Cooperative Clinical Research agreement mechanism will be used. Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. The total direct cost(s) that may be awarded is up to 6.8 million dollars.It is anticipated that one (1) award may be made.Eligible Institutions/Organizations. Institutions/organizations listed in Section III, 1.A. are eligible to apply. Eligible Project Directors/Principal Investigators (PDs/PIs). Individuals with the skills, knowledge, and resources necessary to carry out the proposed research are invited to work with their institution/organization to develop an application for support. Prospective investigators who wish to collaborate with COGA investigators on this continuation application should first discuss their research plans with appropriate COGA PIs so they can be incorporated into the application.Individuals from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups as well as individuals with disabilities are always encouraged to apply for NIH support. Number of PDs/PIs. More than one PD/PI (i.e., multiple PDs/PIs), may be designated on the application. Number of Applications. This is a limited competition. Only one application will be considered.
