Description

Many of the trusses used on covered wood bridges were designed and built without modern engineering analysis. Consequently, even though many have withstood decades and, in the case of some, over a century of use, we have very little understanding of how they "work" as engineering structures. Under this cooperative agreement, Johns Hopkins University will apply modern engineering tests and analyses to these trusses to attempt to determine which features of the bridges carry live and dead loads. The result will shed new, definitive light on the behavior of the bridges and their trusses.
